Vend Success Story: Mugwa Cottage

We love working with our amazing stores at VEND. We have so many outstanding small business success stories so we have decided to highlight stand out shops! 

We are kicking off with MUGWA COTTAGE! Robyn from Mugwa Cottage has been a part of VEND since we opened 14 months ago. Starting out in the smallest shop space we offer Robyn has since grown her amazing business to now taking up not one but two of our biggest shops spaces at VEND!

What is VEND to you?

Vend, to me, is so much more than just my shop.  It is a wonderful community of likeminded small business people.  The staff are lovely and always happy to help.  I have become friends with a lot of the original store owners (and some new ones).  I love buying from them and we are always supporting each other.  I love to spend time wandering around Vend and having a delicious lunch each time I visit.  It has such a great vibe and I am so lucky to be a part of it.

How has your business grown whilst at VEND?

 I started at Vend the first month it opened.  I had a little store with one rack and some shelves.  A short time later I moved into a bigger store.  I then separated into a large and smaller store.  I now have two large stores next door to each other, I love it!  The great thing about Vend is you are able to grow and change with the support of the Vend team.  The ability to grow, move and move again with ease, in the one place, is unique and perfect for my small business.

Why do you think your VEND shop has been so successful?

I think my store has been a success for a few reasons.  I started the store with my handmade festival clothing and fabric.  This has now expanded to boho, curves and fashion to suit all ages and sizes.  I keep my prices reasonable and always have new stock each week.  My store is always full of a variety of stock (maybe too full) but my customers love digging for a bargain or the perfect outfit.  

How do you continue to grow your business and sales?

To keep the business growing I am very active on social media.  The success and growth of Vend also helps my store.  So supporting each other on social media is a great way to get more customers into Vend.  Once they are there, we have to make sure they want to come back and recommend it to their friends.

What would be the advice that you would give other businesses that would like to have their own shop at Vend? 

My advice to anyone thinking about joining Vend is ‘go for it’.  You are not committed to a long term lease, so can avoid that stress.  Once you join, keep your store full and make sure you have new stuff all the time.  A lot of customers return each week and if you have the same stock, they will just walk past.  If they see new things all the time, they will head back to you each time they visit.  Use social media and support all the other stores on social media.  By sharing what’s happening at Vend, you will help to get more people there.  It is a great community for anyone thinking of starting a small business.  You are not on your own and have the support from the Vend team and the other store owners.  It is my happy place!
